Mangareva is principal and the most central of the islands Gambier being 8 km long on 1,5 km in its greater width (15,4 km ²). Its chief town as that of the Gambier is the village of Rikitea. The culminating points of the island are the Mont Duff to 441 m and the Mont Mokoto to 423 Mr. Mangareva means as a Polynesian " mountain flottante". It is divided into 7 villages:

  1. Rikitea (hab. 511)
  2. Gatavake
  3. Kirimiro
  4. Taku
  5. Akaputu
  6. Atirikigaro
  7. Atiaoa

Air Tahiti uses the aerodrome on the Motu Totegegie to connect Tahiti.

Through the island of Mangareva, one finds various attractions that it is with Rikitea, where one can visit the Saint-Michel cathedral built of corals and shells or other ruins left by the missionaries. In addition, one finds on the north-eastern point of the island a bunker which was useful in the years 1960, at the time of the nuclear tests in the Pacific (which ended in 1995), to protect the soldiers during the tests Nucléaire S French. Another bunker, built initially for the population, is used today place to with it as storage for the commune. A generator with gas feeds part of the island in electricity. The population is of Mangareva was of 872 inhabitants in 2002.
