Manfred Bukofzer

Manfred Bukofzer (born the March 27th 1910, prematurely deceased the December 7th 1955) was a Musicologue and a Humaniste germano - American.

Biography

It made its studies with the Université of Heidelberg and the Conservatoire Stern with Berlin, but it left the Germany in 1933, going to Basle to pass its doctorate there. In 1939, it settled with the the United States and became American citizen. He taught with the the University of California to Berkeley of 1941 until his death.

Bukofzer is recognized like a historian specialist in the old Musique, in particular the Baroque music. Its work Music in the Baroque Era (translated into French under the title the Baroque music ) remains one of the essential references on this subject, although certain historians of the music criticized the " germano-centrisme" too many pronounced of its work. Indeed, Bukofzer minimizes the importance of the origin Italy of the opera when this musical style made its great strides at the 17th century.

Moreover, Bukofzer was also a specialist in the English music and a theorist of the music of the period 14th century-16th century. It was also interested in the Jazz and the Ethnomusicologie.
