The manech black head is a Race Ovin E originating in the mountains of the Basque Country, in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques. It is high as well for the meat as for wool and milk.

It is a race of average format, of a weight from 70 to 80 kg for the rams and from 55 to 60 kg for the ewes. The fleece, very thick, is made of a very long Laine white up to 30 cm, which do not recover the head, which is black. The rams carry large horn S curved.

They are very rustic Mouton S, adapted to walk and the Transhumance S in mountain.

It is a general-purpose race, suited to the production of meat and wool. It is exploited as well in pure race as in crossing. The ewes are the good milker. The average production is evaluated with 110 liters by 136 days lactation. Their Lait enters the manufacture of the Fromage Ose-Iraty (AOC).

Its manpower is concentrated in the Basque Country French and represents approximately 120.000 ewes. One also finds of it in the Spanish Basque Country like in South America.

The genealogical Livre of the race was created in 1975.
