Mandarin button
In the imperial Chinese culture, and this until the end of the dynasty Qing (finishing in 1911), the Chinese letters and administrators as well as the military officers used a variety of codes to distinguish their row and position.
One of these codes was the use of balls of round or oval forms of colors on their hats, called " buttons of mandarin".
As there were nine rows in the hierarchy of the mandarins, nine colors were used to mark those.
