Mandagout

Mandagout is a common French, located in the department of the Gard and the area Languedoc-Roussillon.

Its name renvoit with a family of lords of the the Cevennes: Mandagout (or Mandagot), in which one finds for example Guillaume III (bishop of Uzès) and his nephew Robert (Bishop of Marseilles).

Geography

The commune of Mandagout is formed many hamlets dispersed between the valleys of the Vigan and Valleraugue, mainly on the southern and south-eastern slopes of Toureille (culminating point 1  240m). The inhabited areas hardly exceed the 700m altitude and go down until 240m in bottom from valley.

The town hall, the school, the catholic church and the temple protesting, as well as the cemetery all are located in the principal hamlet: Beaulieu.

Economy

  • the main activity is agriculture, the productions most known being the Oignon soft and the Reinette of the Vigan.

Places and monuments

  • On the commune draws up the castles of Mandagout (rebuilt at the 15th century-16th century) and of Arboux, which are now only of large masonries on a monticule barring a valley.
  • In the hamlet of Beaulieu, one distinguishes the remainders from the old protesting temple (bell-tower and rosette, middle of the 17th century), reconverted in dwelling.
  • In the hamlet of Costubague, ruins of a castle having belonged to the family of Albignac
  • Refuge of Cape de Cote (or Cape de Coste). Beautiful place named several times by Andre Chamson, especially in its novel " Men of the road " (1927). Very beautiful sight to the sea per good weather.
