Montereau-Fault-Yonne is a common French, located in the department of Seine-et-Marne and the area Île-de-France.
Its inhabitants is called Monterelais.

Geography
Located at the borders of the Gâtinais in the south, of the Brie in north, the Based in the east, the city holds its name of its geographical position with the confluence of the Yonne and the the Seine (" fault" , also spelled " faut" , comes from the verb to fail in its old direction to fall).
History
In 1359, the king de Navarre Charles the Bad, which held the city because of its Champagne ascent, lost it in front of the regent of France (the future king Charles V).Jean without Fear, duke of Burgundy was killed on the bridge of the city in September 1419 by Tanneguy of Châtel and the lord de Barbazan (see: Assassination of Jean without Fear), during the interview which it had with the dolphin, future king Charles VII. The purpose of this act was of empècher a bringing together of the Dolphin with the Bourguignon party and to avenge the assassination for Louis for Orleans in 1407. That fits in the Civil war between Armagnacs and Burgundian which take place during the Guerre One hundred Year old.
Collegial our-Lady-and-Saint-Wolf contains a sword which according to the legend would have belonged to Jean without Peur (it would actually date from the time of Louis XIV).
On the bridge or Jean without Peur one was assassinated can read this inscription:
- the year millet four hundred and nineteen,
- On an arranged bridge of nine,
- Was meutri Jean of Burgundy
- has Montereau where Yonne is necessary.
- On an arranged bridge of nine,
In 1420, Philippe the Good, wire and successor of the assassinated duke, seized the city, which remained eight years with the hands of the anglo-Burgundian coalition. However, at the conclusion of a long seat, the king Charles VII, helped by Chabannes and Dunois, managed to take it again.
In 1567, during the wars of religion, Condé briefly seized the city.
In 1587, the inhabitants of Montereau took the party of the League, but ended up accepting in 1590 the legitimacy of the new king Henri IV.
Montereau was also the place of one of the last victories of Napoleon the February 14th 1814 against the Austrians: to see Battle of Montereau.
During the XIXe century, Monterau becomes a small industrial center, with, in addition to the industrial faience manufacture, of the factories of chemicals, glassmakings and other manufactures. This development continues during the XXe century. The city knows heavy bombardments at the time of the combat from May-June 1940 during the Second world war. The bridges and the districts of the downtown area are destroyed or suffer important damage. They are rebuilt with the beginning of the year 1950.
The city knows new stages at the end of the years 1950 with the Plan of installation and general organization of the Paris region (PADOG, ancestor of the Information system strategic plan of the area Île-de-France) which makes of Montereau an agglomeration of balance, within the framework of the plan of the " 3 M" of Seine-et-Marne (Meaux, Melun and Montereau). It is in this context that the urban expansion on the plate of Surville is decided. After the construction of a small emergency city in 1955 in this still agricultural zone, it is the construction of a new city which is undertaken with 6000 residences envisaged. Is in addition envisaged a great industrial park with the junction the Seine - Yonne, which causes the digging of a gigantic wet dock to allow an access to the barges large gauge. The objective was then for Montereau to reach a total population of 45000 inhabitants. Finally, following the economic difficulties of the industrial park and the competition of the new cities with the beginning of the year 1970, the urban development is limited than envisaged much more.
