Manassès II of Rethel

Manassès II , dead one March 29th, between 1026 and 1048 was count de Rethel at the beginning of the 11th century. It was probably wire of Manassès {{Ier}}, count de Rethel.

Biography

One knows only few things about this count, and documentation is so much succinte that certain historians considered that there had been only two counts Manassès at the 10th century.

A charter of 1026 names his wife, certain a Hobby-horse.

In addition the Genealogiciæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis name Iveta or Iuette (another shape of Judith) married to Manassès, count de Rethel and sister of the count Ebles Ier de Roucy, of Liétaud, count de Marle, and of Eudes, count de Rumigny. This Ivette was initially identified in Judith, woman of Manassès III, but the chronological study shows some dificultée: Baudouin of the Borough, born about 1075, is wire of Hugues Ier de Rethel, born towards 1040-45, wire of Manassès III and Judith, born about 1010-20. However the father of Ebles de Roucy, whatever it is died before the year millet, when Ebles becomes count de Roucy. As it is nowadays proposed as Ivette is the wife of Manassès II and not of Manassès III.

The following question is to know if Hobby-horse and Judith de Roucy are the same person. The answer is probably affirmative. Hobby-horse can passes for another shape of Judith, and it has as a close relation a count Eudes, whereas Judith de Roucy has among her brothers the count Eudes de Rumigny.

From this union would have been born:

  • in a probable way Manassès III († 1081), count de Rethel.
  • and in manner very hypothetical Doda, married to Godefroy II, duke of Low-Lotharingie.
