Manassès III of Rethel
Manassès III , shortly after dead 1080, was count de Rethel during the 10th century. It was probably wire of Manassès II, count de Rethel, and of Judith (or Hobby-horse) of Roucy.
Biography
One knows only few things about this count, who is regularly quoted between 1048 and 1081.
Marriage
He married a Judith which one is assured only the first name. Chronologically it would have been born towards 1010/20. Several assumptions were proposed to specify its origin:- Judith de Roucy : the Genealogiciæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis quote a Judith, marries of Manassès de Rethel, like sister of the counts Ebles Ier de Roucy and of Letald de Marle. The Chronique of Albéric of the Three Fountains (written in 1119) qualifies it " mother of Hugues, count de Rethel". But the father of Ebles de Roucy inevitably died before the year millet, and this proposal is chronologically impossible, the chronicler having probably confused Manassès, this Judith de Roucy being rather the wife of Manassès II.
- Judith of Boulogne , girl of Eustace Ier, count de Boulogne and of Mathilde of Leuwen: this identification was proposed for explains the bond of cousinage between the kings Baudouin I {{er}} and Baudouin II of Jerusalem. But, in addition to the fact that the Genealogica comitum Boloniensium does not mention the existence of this girl, another explanation is possible (by the following assumption, or Doda, woman of Godefroy II which would be girl of Manasses II of Rethel).
- Judith de Lotharingie : the comment of Li Estoire of Jerusalem and Antioche , written at the 13th century, indicates that Manassès was married with a girl of Godefroy II, basic duke Lotharingie. That would explain the relationship between the two Baudouin of Jerusalem, as well as the implication of the duke Godefroy in a donation of Manassès.
Currently, the assumption which appears most probable is that of Judtih de Lotharingie.
Children
Manassès and Judith had as children:- perhaps a Renaud
