Management operating system of library
A management operating system of library is a Progiciel intended for the data-processing management of the various tasks of a Bibliothèque.
Its various functions go from the current management of loan to the statistics, management of the purchases and the receipts, while passing by the current management of the funds.
Functions
A SIGB is conceived to automate the tasks of the librarian:
- cataloguing, in particular cataloguing in line (access of a library to a tank of notes produced by a central library or shared by several libraries) thanks to the standard Z39.50, with a management differentiated from the periodic S;
- the management of the circulation of the documents (loan, return, reservations, recall of the documents out-times);
- acquisitions (suggestion of the readers, précommande, précatalogage, followed orders);
- OPAC.
History
The SIGB appear under the name of automated systems in the years 1970. Before the introduction of data-processing management, the libraries used hard-bound notes to index their collections.
Since the years 1980, the fenestrated and multi-task modules allowed the integration of functions before separate.
In the years 1990, more and more of applications related to Internet network appear: cataloguing on line, gate Internet, etc
Choice of a SIGB
For the great majority of the libraries, a system overmeasure is not justified, because it is too expensive, length to be developed and too partially satisfactory, the needs for the relatively complex but uniform libraries being. It is cheaper and more satisfactory to resort to SIGB, diffused turn-key by specialized companies.
Au préalable, before any computerization, one must write a schedule of conditions, fruit of an analysis of the needs and the functions to be computerized: volumes, and the allocated financial allocation. All these elements are submitted to the suppliers. This system is a software which must allow the management of the bibliographic records, the loan and research and the consultations of the catalogs. Hardware and software will have to be compatible.
Those which are present on the market are generally intended for the averages and large libraries (addressing itself to a population from 10 to 15.000 inhabitants, that is to say 2 to 5000 readers) in public reading. For the TDCI or BCD and the small libraries their functionalities are simpler.
For the dependant media libraries in network the collective catalog is one of the components of SIGBD. He meets one or more aim (S):
- the localization which can allow the Prêt between libraries (PEB)
- the identification which makes it possible to obtain precise references to borrow, quote or acquire the document
- the production or the recovery of bibliographic records in the tank of bibliographic records
- the management of the documents
Once the budget determined, before the order, the libraries of the local government agencies can, in France, to submit a dossier to the community of fastening, in order to obtain the financial assistance of the Regional management of the cultural affairs (DRAC).
