Management of Maintenance Computer-assisted
The Gestion of Maintenance Computer-assisted (often shortened in GMAO ) is an assisted method of management of a Logiciel intended for the services of Maintenance of a Entreprise in order to help it in its missions.
Functionalities of a GMAO
A GMAO initially aims at assisting the services maintenance of the companies in their missions. Let us recall that a service maintenance, according to the definition of AFNOR, seeks to maintain or restore a good (equipment) in specified state so that this one is able to ensure a given service. A GMAO can also be an interesting tool of other services of the company, like the production or the exploitation (in order to provide information on the state of the equipment), as well as the general financial management or of the company, by providing indicators facilitating decision makings as regards renewal of park, for example.
Thus, the most current functions of these Progiciel S are:
- Management of the equipment: inventory of the equipment, localization, management of information dedicated by type of equipment (production, buildings, vehicles, networks, computers…)
- Management of maintenance: corrective (with OT: order of work, or BT: work sheet, or ODM: order of maintenance), preventive (systematic, conditional, estimated)… This module often includes functionalities open to users beyond the service maintenance, like a management of the Requests for control (DI), allowing any person authorized of the company to point out an anomaly having to be taken into account by maintenance.
- Management of the Stock S: stores, minimum quantities, maximum, of restocking, analyzes ABC, Pick-list S, referencing and research, articles of replacement, catalog suppliers…
- Gestion of the purchases: spare parts or services (subcontracting, fixed price or control), cycle estimate/request for purchase/order/reception & return supplier, invoicing…
- Staff management and planning: activities, trades, loading schedule, estimated, pointing of the hours…
- Management of the costs and budget: of stock, labor, of purchase, lease of material… preparation of the budgets, periodic follow-up, reports/ratios of variation…
- KPI (Key Indicators Performance): cockpit of piloting or instrument panel for the manager (basic requests of data relating to of the statistics, alarms, etc)
Other functionalities exist: management of the inspection, metrology, standards (transport, VRM…), code-bars, bond with a SIG, material mobile (PDA, Pocket PC…), Remote monitoring (analyzes vibratory, infra-red…)
Awaited benefit
The awaited benefit of the installation of a GMAO are potentially important, although difficult to quantify because often indirect. One can quote:
- Better management and reduction of the costs (labor, spare parts, administrative treatment…),
- Improvement of the reliability and the availability of the equipment,
- Optimization of the purchases (assistance to the Invitations to tender, management of the contracts of external people receiving benefits…),
- Improvement of REX: Experience feedback grace in particular to the history of work of maintenance,
- Improvement of the planning of the interventions,
- Research of the preventive/corrective ratio optimal according to the managed equipment and of the objectives of availability,
- Better control of the activity of the subcontractors and people receiving benefits external,
- Improvement of the inventory control (better control of the exits, helps with the inventories, optimization of the rate of rotation…),
- Traceability of the equipment, sometimes to answer regulatory constraints (ATEX, 21CFR11…),
- Participation in a step TPM,
- Decision-making aid thanks to the supply of more objective indicators, in particular decisions of renewal of material.

Branches of industry concerned
All the branches of industry which have equipment to maintain are potentially concerned by the exploitation of a tool of GMAO.
One can thus quote the sectors:
- Industry (production, car, pharmacy…)
- Energy (gas, oil, electricity…)
- Transport (road, railway, air, public transport…)
- Medical (hospital)
- Real (HLM, locative, of general company and head offices, means…)
- Large distribution
- Local government agencies (urban community, agglomeration, airport,…)
- etc
According to the branch of industry concerned, targeted functionalities can exist in the form of solutions " verticales". For example the electronic signature required by the FDA in the drug company, the management of the " assets linéaires" for the oil world, the management of the calibration or matério-vigilance for the biomedical apparatuses, of the aspects safety and standards, etc .....
Various names and related families of software package
The software of Gestion of the maintenance computer-assisted is often indicated by the abbreviation GMAO . The equivalent in English is " CMMS" for " Computerized Maintenance System" Management;. As their name indicates it, they are management software, intended above all for the world of the company, and having only little or not functionalities " time réel".More recently, in English the name Enterprise Asset Management appeared (EAM), which gave place to the French translation Gestion of the credits . This translation can bring a confusion because the French term " actif" has a very marked financial connotation, whereas the tools of EAM are interested only in the " credits physiques" , i.e. with the equipment and the physical goods managed by the company. This new name translates the will of software EAM to exceed the framework of the only services maintenance, by proposing functionalities interesting the head offices and financial company. In practice, this step relates to at least as much the methotology of implementation of the software in the company that the functionalities of the software itself.
Integration of the GMAO in the information system of the company
A GMAO can have an interest to be interfaced with other existing software of the company, and in particular:
- an inventory control: in order to manage stocks of spare part. In practice, specificities of management of a stock of spare parts compared to a stock of production often bring to use the modules of stock management proposed by the GMAO themselves.
- a purchase order control: in order to manage the purchases of service or spare part. Modules of purchase order control are often proposed within the GMAO, but it is often preferable to already use the software of purchase in place in the company.
- a budgetary control or financial: the GMAO has data of costs which it can be interesting to consolidate in the total financial management of the company.
- an electronic management of document (GED): in particular in order to reach files of plans or documents technical.
- a management of inheritance (in the real field)
- a system real-time of GTC/GTB: in order to generate automatically in the GMAO of the interventions in the event of supervening of certain events detected by sensors, or in order to update the values of meters of use relating to certain equipment.
Dedicated GMAO or ERP?
The will to integrate more and more the GMAO within the information system of the company brought the editors of business packages integrated (ERP) to develop modules GMAO within their offer. The interest of the ERP compared to dedicated software GMAO is the subject of debates.
The partisans of the ERP underline the interest of a single product in term of coherence in the consolidation of information (in particular financial informations), but also the interest to have a user interface unified, not to multiply data-processing competences on various software or databases, to simplify the project while treating only with one integrator, to avoid the development of specific interfaces…
The partisans of the software of dedicated GMAO support as for them that modules GMAO of the ERP bring a vision more financial than technical and thus only little the users maintenance satisfy, than projects ERP are of such a complexity that the maintenance part is often neglected (other modules like the production having priority), involving with final rejection of the users and a misuse of the product.
The market of the GMAO in the world and in France
History
Historically, the concept of GMAO emerged in the years 1980, parallel to the Production control computer-assisted (CAM).
The very first software was specific developments conceived to meet the needs for industry, within the framework of the maintenance of equipment of production. The first Progiciels (software standards) date in France of end of the year 80 and they also were initially intended for industrial environment. One counts at the end of the Eighties ten standard software of GMAO proposed in France.
Thereafter, the software of GMAO found applications in the maintenance of all types of equipment: real goods, technical vehicles, installations (hospital, research centres…), transport infrastructures (highways, airports…).
Vis-a-vis this widening of the sectors being equipped in GMAO, the editors reacted in a various way: certain editors made the choice continue to propose a single software for all the sectors, others specialized in specific fields and intervene only in these fields, others finally address themselves to all the fields but by proposing versions for each branch of industry particular, developed starting from a " noyau" common software.
The market of the GMAO today
There exist today several hundreds of tools of GMAO in the world or in France, diffused by data-processing editors or integrators.
The worldwide market of the GMAO/EAM (sales of software) is estimated between 2,2 billion $ and 2,8 billion $ in 2010 (ARC Advisory Group), with an average growth of 5% per annum. At the head of this worldwide market, MRO Software which held, before its repurchase by IBM, 14,4% of the market with 200 million CA dollars Behind, one finds SAP (with module PM) 11,2% then YEWS 10,8% and Infor (ex-Datastream) 7,2% (source: Industries and Technologies - n°881 - September 2006).
It will be noted that the majority of the international leaders of the market were repurchased in 2006: Datastream (MP2, MP5, Datastream 7i) acquired by Inforen March 2006; MRO Software (Maximo, Mxes) acquired by IBM (division TIVOLI) in August 2006; and Indus (Passport, Insite), amalgamating with MDSI, constitutes the Ventyx new business (held by Vista Equity Partners). Thus, these companies specialized before in GMAO become integrated into editors plus general practitioners of the type ERP.
It will be announced that these world leaders are not necessarily leaders in France, as testifies the detailed classification to it to the following paragraph.
To have a list of the French-speaking editors, one will be able to consult directory DMOZ or the site of the AFIM (French Association of Engineers de Maintenance) which publishes a panorama of the software packages of GMAO.
One will note moreover than some ERP integrate a module “maintenance”: SAP , YEWS …
Classification of the first ten editors of GMAO in France
It is difficult to propose a classification of the editors according to objective data, in particular on certain very competing sectors like that of the GMAO, where hundreds of companies offer their products. Indeed, the majority of the information communicated by the editors themselves prove to be unverifiable and sometimes skewed (in particular the number of sold licenses). The classification below is established on one of the rare official and verifiable data: the turnover of the assessments published . The classification itself does not take account of CA export since one is interested here only in the market shares on France , and rests on given public and published officially (thus verifiable elsewhere than near the editor).
One can raise that the three leaders, without exception, make party of small ten companies which had positioned on the French market of the GMAO well before 1990, either directly, or by repurchase of product, illustrating the inertia of the French market with respect to its historical actors.
These three companies have however very different profiles: Infor France is a subsidiary company controlled by the american company Infor Global Solutions which positions today with the 3rd world rank of the suppliers of software intended for the companies. This 3rd rank was conquered primarily thanks to multiples and expensive repurchases of companies (Datastream represented a minor purchase in term of value compared to the other companies acquired by the group). Infor profits today from a considerable financial standing (see Wikipédia article in English: ). Its detractors put forward the difficulty that this company is likely to meet while seeking to constitute a coherent range of product starting from products of so various origins, while sparing its very heterogeneous installed base.
Siveco Group and International CARL, powerful on the French market, remained in fact extremely dependant on this national market, which their American competitors do not fail to underline.
Siveco Group is directed since August 2007 by discussed the Belgian business man Jan Coene. Siveco Group, although in loss in 2005, records CA significant export (33% in 2006 and 2005) and carries out a positive bottom line 2006 of mainly with an important tax credit (185 K€ of tax credit on 234 K€ of bottom line).
CARL International is it always held by its historical shareholder. Its weakness on the worldwide market (10% only of CA export) does not seem to affect its last assessments published (9% of profitability into 2005,10% in 2006)
