Managed

Gera is a town of Thuringe, Land of Germany. Place of jurisdiction, one finds there Amtsgericht and Landgericht (equivalents of our Magistrates' court and Court of Bankruptcy), an administrative court, a court of justice of work and a social court.

History

Mentioned for the first time in a document of donation of the territories made by the emperor Otton III in favor of her sister the abbess of Quedlinburg in 995, Gera would obtain her statute of free city in 1237. With the Moyen-âge the fabrics of Managed were famous.

Managed was the residence of the lords of Weida and then of the counts (after 1778 princes) of the branch young branch of the Reuss “Managed” (old German dynasty). Starting from 1848 Gera is the capital of the Principauté of Reuss connects junior ( Reuß Jüngere Linie ) rested by the last branch by the branch junior by Reuss (“Schleiz connects”) which because of the extinction of all the other branches joins together in its hand all the territories of the branch junior.

Because of the large fires in 1450, 1639, 1686 and 1780 Gera is deprived of the medieval monuments, nevertheless one finds there many examples of architecture of the end of the 18th century, XIXe and the 20th century. The orangery dating from the 18th century with its garden (named “Küchengarten” - Pot) is a very delicate example of architecture absolutist of the 18th century. Managed became an important industrial center at the 19th century: the first steam engine - oldest in the new countries of Germany - there being installed in 1833. The Tramway which exists since 1892 is one of oldest of Germany. The richness of formerly survived in the villas of the contractors sometimes built by important architects as Van de Velde whose majority exist still today. Managed was the capital of the Volksstaat Reuß (State of the Reuss people), founded after the First World War and disappeared in 1920 with the foundation from the Land from Thuringe. During the Second world war there was many destruction, the old residence of the princes, the Osterstein Castle, for example was completely destroyed.

Become the capital of Bezirk (department) of the German Democratic republic in 1952 Gera knew one time of strong development thanks to the mines of Uranium worked in Ronneburg close to Managed to feed the atomic program of the Soviet Union. One created many new districts at that time, for example Lusan and Bieblach-Ost (Bieblach-Is). With the recasting of the Land of Thuringe in 1990 Bezirk and the city of Managed are integrated there.

Today Gera suffers from the problems of almost all the cities of the old GDR: difficult recovery of industry, unemployment, ageing of the population. Depopulating itself more and more, Gera will probably arrive at a population of 70.000 inhabitants in 2007, the year when the BUGA will take place (abbreviation of “Bundesgartenschau” - federal Exposure of gardening and the parks).
