Biography
It begins its career with New York with his close friend Marcel Duchamp, where they form an American branch of the movement Dada. After some unfruitful artistic experiments, and in particular a publication on the New Yorkean Hobby-horse in 1920, Man Ray concludes that " Hobby-horse cannot live with New York ".The Man Ray July 14th, 1921 unloads in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime), then arrives at Paris, the St-Lazare station where Marcel Duchamp accommodates it. The evening even, it is presented to the surrealist Louis Aragon, André Breton, Paul Éluard and Gala, Theodore Fraenkel, Jacques Rigaut and Philippe Soupault. It settles in the Quartier of Montparnasse, meets and fall in love with the French singer and model Kiki de Montparnasse. It also meets the dressmaker Paul Poiret. It carries out many photographs of mode which are published in the magazines and contribute to make known it. Much to its regret, it will never on the occasion to make the portrait of the dressmaker. In its book of memories, he entrusts that to dead of Paul Poiret, he sent to a newspaper a photograph of the personal doctor of the dressmaker as being a portrait of Poiret. This photo was published like such. With Jean Arp, max Ernst, Andre Masson, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, it presents its works to the first surrealist exposure of the Pierre gallery to Paris in 1925.
Friend of Marie-Laure de Noailles, it makes in 1928 to Hyères to the villa of Noailles its first film “ the Mysteries of the Castle of the Dice ”. In Montparnasse, during thirty years, Man Ray revolutionizes the photographic art. The large artists of its time pose under its objective, like James Joyce, Gertrude Stein or Jean Cocteau. It contributes to develop the work of Eugene Atget which it makes discover with the surrealist and with its assistant Berenice Abbott. In 1934, Meret Oppenheim poses for Man Ray, this series of photographs the naked ones becomes its more famous.
In 1940, after the defeat, Man Ray manages to join Lisbon and embarks for the the United States in company of El Salvador Dalí and Gala and the scenario writer Rene Clair. After some days spent to New York, it gains the west coast with the project to leave the country for Tahiti where there would remain a few years there. Arrived at Hollywood, it receives proposals for an exposure, meets a woman, Juliet, and decides to recover to paint.
It becomes Satrape Collège of Pataphysique in 1963.
He dies on November 18th, 1976 and is buried with the Cimetière of Montparnasse (the 7th division) where one can read on his tomb his epitaph: Unconcerned, indifferent goal not (Detached, but not indifferent).
