Mammon
Mammon personifies the richness, the money, in the biblical writings.
Etymology
Mammon , word of origin araméenne, meaning “rich”. Nevertheless its etymology is obscure. Some bring it closer to the Hebrew matmon , meaning treasure , money .Others bring it closer to the phenician mommon meaning benefit .
In the Talmud, like in the New Testament, the word “Mammon” means “possession” (material), but he is sometimes personified. No man can serve two Masters: because always it will haïra one and like the other. One cannot serve at the same time God and Mammon. (Matthieu 6:24). It is a current practice at Kabalistes to give to an angel, the name of its function. Thus the Mammon demon was quickly created since this biblical context. Mammon is the demon of the richness and avarice.
Holy Francoise Romaine (1384 - 1440) presents Mammon as being one of the three princes of the Enfer S, subjected to Lucifer only. It governs the various sins which the love of the money makes make.
Jacques Ellul, as for him, written in the subversion of Christianity that Mammon is part of Satan, one of its characteristics, a means of defining it. Besides it devotes to it a whole part of its work.
In its work the Single one and its property, the German philosopher max Stirner associates Mammon with an illusory divinity to which the irreligious people would sacrifice, by analogy with pious God.
