Geography

History

origins:

MAMETZ: whose not very credible legend allots the formation to a virgin named anchorite MAMEZIE, is located at the origin, along the river the LILY, around the rather imposing castle-extremely which was destroyed at the 17th century, property of the family of CROY. Thereafter, the village extends towards the mill and around the Church before gaining the plain. The name of MAMETZ, étymologiquement, indicates a place, an unhealthy property (mau mez) resonance of many marshes which, at the time, stagnated perpetually in this sector.

MARTHES: In beginning MARTEKE (1299) is property of the bishop of Thérouanne which in 1210 yields its rights to the Abbey of Saint-Augustin de Thérouanne who will yield them in his turn with the Family of CROY. Family VANDERSTICHEL of MAUBUS had there a castle of which there do not remain traces.

CRECQUES: CRESEQUE or QUERECQUE (1160) is in the beginning a stronghold held partly by the bishop of Thérouanne and partly by the castle of SURFACE. Here also, there did not remain traces of a medieval castle whose one knows only the existence.

Places and monuments

The presence of a water mill on the drawn board of the albums of Croy relating to the Castle of Mametz attests the existence of this mill about the years 1600. The western part of the mill, such as see it still nowadays goes back to the origins with a building out of stones of Blessy and bricks. The old cadastres indicate to us that house, mill and grounds belonged to the grounds of the castle since that the first owner after the Revolution is it Cy-in front of Count de Merode shareholder in Vienna. The Delaliau family becomes owner in 1850 at the time of the sale of the grounds of the castle with Mr. Chartier. The Delaliau family builds the brick building along the Lily with remarkable arched windows.

The Mill had 6 pairs of grinding stones and a very beautiful fall on the Lily, with a body of farm built on 2 hectares 40. A paddle wheel of the " type; Poncelet" (of the name of its engineer - 19th century). The last of the Delaliau girls rents the mill at the end of the 19th century with the Pennequin-Franck family. Mr Emile Pennequin is originating in Blendecques and it will repurchase the mill in 1926. Will be born with the mill, a Lucien son who will take the succession. With died of Lucien and his son Fernand, too early missing, the mill will close its paddles and will cease turning. After some vicissitudes which made fear the worst for the future of this construction whose whole is integrated harmoniously in the landscape and fact integral part of the communal past, Mr Lia Lecat knew to treat with happiness the property that it had just bought and renovation works undertaken gave again life with the old walls. Today, this sector is dedicated to tourism but it is not shocking to see the caravans of the camp-site replacing the cars of the " masks-manées". It makes soft dream along banks and it is good of musarder in the green of the meadows… It is places where still grind peaceful and benevolent phantoms… The Mill of Mametz is these.
