Mamady Keïta is a Guinean musician, percussionnist and more particularly djembéfola (player of djembés) of famous international, born in August 1950 with Balandugu (Guinea). He currently lives with San Diego, California.

Biography

Mamady Keïta was born in 1950 in Balandugu a village located in Wassolon (province of Siguiri) close to the river Fe, in Republic of Guinea. His/her father is Master hunter and fida tigi (main of the plants and healer). He is initiated with the Djembé dice the 7 years age by Karinkadjan Kondé, djembéfola of his village. In 1964, 14 years old, it is selected to enter to the National Ballet Djoliba as a principal beater and a soloist. From 1979 to 1986, he is the artistic director. He undertakes many rounds in Africa, in Asia, Europe and with the the United States.

In 1986 it enters to the Ballet Kotéba of Souleymane Koli to Abidjan. It adopts the nickname of “Kargus there” to avoid any confusion with “Secret” Mamady, other Mamady Keïta of the troop.

In 1987 it takes part in film “ the Platinized Life ”, of Claude Cadiou.

In 1988, it established with Brussels (Belgium). It gives courses of percussions, more particularly the rates/rhythms mandingues, within the Répercussions school. It there côtoie Marie Daulne, then professor of songs and African dances. This same year, it also created its new group of traditional musics mandingues Sewa Kan, with which he gives several concert in Europe (France, Netherlands, Italy, Germany).

In 1989, it leaves an album “ Wassolon ”. The success of the courses of percussions makes it possible Mamady to invite his/her “brother” “Secret” Mamady of the Ballet Koteba to join it in Europe. This last will become Toman Keïta, “homonymous” Toman meaning in Malinké.

In 1990, it organizes with Répercussion the first training course of percussions and African dances in Guinea with the collaboration of the Ministry for the Culture of Guinea and the National Ballet Djoliba

In 1991, it founds its own school TamTam Mandingue. Laurent Chevalier carries out film “ Djembéfola ” which is devoted to him.

In 1992, it leaves a new album “ Nankama ” which means “ born for that ” (nickname given to Mamady by a wizard of the village seeing the prowesses of the young boy).

In 1993, it organizes, in Matoto (Conakry), the first training course in Guinea of its school TamTam Mandingue.

In 1994, it leaves in round through the Japan (Tokyo, Ōsaka, Okayama, Kagoshima, Hiroshima, Kawasaki) with its group Sewa kan.

In 1995, its third album “ Mögöbalu leaves”. It leaves in round to the United States and for the second time to Japan.

In 1996, it devotes its album “ Hamana ” (which is a Guinean area) to the rates/rhythms of Dunumba (which means the dance of the strong men).

In 1998, it leaves its fifth album “ Afö ” with the group Sewa Kan and festival its ten years presence to Belgium, at the time of the Festival Color Coffee, by a fabulous concert whose guests have as names; Mory Kanté, Manu Dibango, Khadja Nin, Doudou Diaye Pink, Famoudou Konaté, Soungalo Coulibaly.
