Born in a middle-class family, her father was administrator of the fields of the Danish crown after having made career in the army, Conrad was intended to become Pasteur, but its taste of the letters will involve it towards the University of Copenhagen at the 15 years age. It there discovers the ideas of the French revolution and publicly preaches freedom of the press.
It is exiled initially in Sweden, then with Hamburg. Finally, it arrives in France in November 1799. Its idea is to equip its country of adoption with a treaty of geography which does not exist yet contrary to the Germany and of the Great Britain. Its meeting with Edme Mentelle, professor with the Teacher training school charged to reform the handbooks of geography will be determining. Their common work will produce a " Mathematical, physical geography and policy of all the parts of the monde" in sixteen volumes published of 1803 to 1807.
Conrad, good journalist and convinced that only of good publications will make progress science, founds in 1807, " Annals of Voyages" and in 1819, " Annals of the Voyages, the Geography and Histoire" . He will also collaborate in the " Newspaper of the debates " .
In 1807, the armies of Napoleon reach the Poland; however, no work worthy of this name existed in French on this country. A " Table of Pologne" was requested from Malta-Brown Conrad and this one acquired its task in six months, which will establish its fame definitively.
Malta-brown is not a geographer of ground, he takes as a starting point many accounts while being the inventor of the terms " science géographique" and of the concept of the " Companies of Géographie" which will be an obvious success on all the continents, in this last case starting from the French example. It devotes a good part of its works to the physical geography but the vocabulary at its disposal remains limited by its inaccuracy. It tries to improve the system of interpretation defined by Buache, geographer of the precursory king of the discipline, around the catchment areas, not without mislayings, fault of sufficient concepts satisfactorily to define the physical shapes which it observes. Its major work will be celebrates it " Precise of Universal Geography or Description of all the parts of the world " published starting from 1810, first " GU" French. This work, whose last volume appears in 1829 after the death of Malta-Brown, will be a considerable success (in spite of the charges of plagiarisms which will not miss) if one judges some by the number of republications and increases whose it will be the object until the moment when the Universal Geography of Reclus will détrônera it after 1860.
After the foundation of the Company of Geography in 1821, he was the first general secretary, for the years 1822-1824. Its second wire, Victor-Adolphe, were him also geographer and in his turn general secretary of the Company of Geography of 1859 to 1866.
A street of the 20th district of Paris bears its name since 1877.
