Malmö (Danish: Malmø ) is a city in the extreme south of the Sweden. It is the most important city of the area of Scanie with 248  000 inhabitants.

The Commune of Malmö counts approximately 270  000 inhabitants (2004), which makes 3rd the more important of Sweden, after those of Stockholm and Gothenburg.

The metropolis of Malmö counts more than 530.000 inhabitants and is next to that of Copenhagen and its 1 million inhabitants; this unit, called area of the Øresund constitutes a major pole in Scandinavia.

For various reasons, whose its geographical location, Malmö became with the passing of years the most cosmopolitan city of Sweden, a third of its inhabitants being immigrants of first or second generation.

Geography

Malmö deals with Copenhagen, the capital of the Denmark on the island of Sjælland. Since the 1er July 2000, the bridge of Øresund 8 kilometers length between the Sweden and the Denmark, span the strait of the Øresund to connect Malmö to Copenhagen.

suburban trains cross the bridge every 20 minutes, connecting Malmö, Copenhagen and its subway (inaugurated on October 19th, 2002), while passing by the airport of Copenhagen (located just at the exit of the bridge, Danish side). Trains broad outlines for Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo and Hamburg cross also the bridge. All the trains have a stop with the airport of Copenhagen.

In March 2005 began the construction of a new railway tunnel called Citytunneln (City tunnel). The tunnel will go from the central station to Hylievång (in the south of Malmö) from where the railway line will be connected to that crossing the bridge of Øresund. A new stop will be built in Triangeln (the triangle), an important place of the city where many commercial and cultural attractions are. At the exit of the tunnel with Hylievång, a new shopping mall, a sports complex and a hotel will be also built.

In addition to the airport of Copenhagen, Malmö is served by the airport of Malmö-Sturup, located at about thirty kilometers in the south-east of the city. In parallel with the Citytunneln project, it is envisaged to extend the railway line to the airport, at present only connected to Malmö by the E65 highway. This airport is mainly used for the Swedish interior flights, goods transport, but also by the companies at low costs, and for flights charter.

The highway network was improved with the opening of the bridge of Øresund. The European road E47 (in the past E6) skirts the west coasts Swedish and Norwegian since Malmö until Kirkenes on the Mer of Barents. There is also the European road E20 towards Helsinborg then Stockholm (E55, in the past E4); and the European road E22 bound for Kalmar.

The inhabitants are proud the vast parks of the city, most important being Pildammsparken and Kungsparken , of the long beaches, and the old tradition of decoration of the city with plants and flowers of season.

The bicycle is privileged means of transport with Malmö, being given the vast network of cycle tracks, and the fact that the city does not comprise practically any difference in altitude.

History

The development of Malmö date of the 12th century. It was attached to the Denmark until in 1658, date on which Charles X Gustave of Sweden attacks the Denmark and forces Frederic III of Denmark, by the Traité of Roskilde, to yield the grounds of the south of the Sweden, of which Malmö.

The Université of Malmö ( Malmö högskola in Swedish) was founded in 1998 and accommodates approximately 21.000 students (2004).

Notorious places and monuments

The city gains in popularity as a tourist destination. It preserves much historical charm with a truffée “old city” of small shops. One also finds in Malmö a medieval castle: Malmöhus , which lodges a small museum of the city and a rather important art gallery.

The Turning Torso, a spectacular tower block, located in the northern district of the city, whose construction was completed November 2005. It is the second higher tower of dwelling of Europe, and the most building of Scandinavia top of its 190 meters.

The night life concentrates mainly around two places: Lilla torg (the “small place”), the “smart” place of the old city with its pubs and their terraces, and of many nightclubs in the vicinity; and Möllevångstorget in the more popular district, place of the artists and the “live” music.

In August each year takes place the Malmöfestivalen , festival which sees the streets and the places to fill of scenes in concerts and other cultural activity(AP)s during a little more than one week, the entirely free whole.
