Mali Iđoš

Mali Iđoš , in Serb Cyrillic МалиИђош and in Hungarian Kishegyes, is a locality and a municipality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. They belong septentrional to the district of Bačka. In 2002, the locality counted: 5465 inhabitants, including 88,3% of Hungarian, and the municipality of which it is the center: 13494, including 55,92% of Hungarian, 20,83% of Montenegrins and 17,46% of Serb.

The name of the city means the " small Iđoš" , to distinguish it the town of Iđoš, in the septentrional Banat. In spite of the number of its inhabitants, Mali Iđoš is officially classified among the " villages" from Serbia.

History

The name of Kishegyes is mentioned for the first time in 1476. The city was completely destroyed by the Othoman at the 16th century. It was repopulated in 1769 by 81 Hungarian families catholic come from Békésszentandrás.

The area, rich person of its agriculture, saw its population increasing until years 1980. But, in the years 1990, the local economy was ruined and much young people started to emigrate in Hungary. After the war in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzégovine (1995 - 1996), Serb refugees came to settle there. There exists in fact of the tensions between the Hungarians previously installed and the Serb new arrivals.

Localities of the municipality of Mali Iđoš

Mali Iđoš ( Kishegyes ) and Feketić ( Bácsfeketehegy ) have a Hungarian majority of settlement. Lovćenac is populated mainly by Montenegrins.

Curiosities

The oldest building of Mali Iđoš (Kishegyes) is the Catholic church Holy-Anne, built in 1788 in a Style baroque.

An obelisk commemorates the Bataille of Kishegyes.

The area is also rich in natural curiosity, in particular the walls of Lœss of the hills of Telečka.
