Malcolm X

Méricourt is a common French, located in the department of the Pas-de-Calais and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais. It belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Lens - Liévin (Communaupole) which gathers 36 common, is 250 000 inhabitants.
This commune is divided between the cantons of Avion and Rouvroy.

Its inhabitants is called Méricourtois.

History

The history of the area remains marked by the mining Catastrophe known as Catastrophe of Courrières which made 1099 dead the March 10th 1906 on the territories of Billy-Montigny, Méricourt, Noyelles-under-Lens and Sallaumines.

It is in Méricourt that the Memorial of the mining catastrophe known as is of Courrières (1099 dead in March 1906). Since 2006, this Memorial comprises also a way of walk reconstituting the underground course " rescapés" , i.e. survivors who arose from the galleries broken down approximately three weeks after the dust and firedamp explosion.
