Malbaie is a city in the regional Municipalité of county of Charlevoix-Is to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Capital-Main road.
The principal agglomeration is at the mouth of the Malbaie river, but the city extends on a vast territory on each side from the river and along the Fleuve the St. Lawrence. The villages of Point-with-Peak, River-Malbaie, Holy-Agnes, Cape-with-the Aigle and Saint-Faithful belong to the city of Malbaie.
The hotel the Manor Richelieu, witness of the time of the famous white boats (beginning of the 20th century), overhangs the river top of its cliff. It is without question the most known building of Malbaie, and probably of all the area of Charlevoix. The Casino of Charlevoix is located just at side. One also finds in Malbaie of the golf courses, of many inns and restaurants as well as the Winter sports resort of the Mount Large-Bottoms located at River-Malbaie. The National park of the High-Throat-of-the-River-Malbaie is located at the North-West of Malbaie. The Museum of Charlevoix, located at the harbor of Point-with-Peak, is famous.
Cape-with-the Eagle and Saint-Faithful, neighbors one of the other, are both located at the edge of the the St. Lawrence and offer from the impregnable points of view on this one. Cape-with-the Eagle, in addition to being a picturesque village having a vocation of holiday with its many inns and lodgings, has also a wearing of refuge (marina) which represents a big step for the sailors of the St. Lawrence sailing in the estuary of the river. It is besides one of the most difficult areas, but also of most beautiful for navigation: frequent currents, fogs in addition to many reefs and islands. A race of sailing ships called the Regatta of the triangle is held to with it also the first end of the week of September.
For its part, Holy-Agnes and her pretty village are located in an undulating area of an average altitude of 450 meters, with the doors of the back-country of Charlevoix.
In 1608, the founder of Quebec, Samuel de Champlain, gives the name of the place which will become Malbaie. While penetrating in water, he notices that this bay is muddy and he calls it trunk baye .
Formerly Malbaie was a seigniory which extended from the Éboulements until Saint-Siméon. In 1845 the municipality of Saint-Etienne of Malbaie is founded. The village of Malbaie (core more urbanized) is detached some in 1896, then later River-Malbaie, Clermont and Point-with-Peak are detached too. Saint-faithful, including Cape-with-the Eagle, formed already a distinct municipality.
The January 23rd 1958, Malbaie obtains officially the statute of city. In the years 1990 a process of fusion started and Malbaie takes again a little the size which it had formerly. Point-with-peak in 1995, then Holy-Agnes, Cape-with-the Eagle, Saint-Faithful and River-Malbaie in 1999 were amalgamated with Malbaie.
Since the 19th century, Malbaie, and in particular Point-with-Peak, are a vacation resort attended by the Canadian and American upper middle class. Located on the edge of the river, Point-with-Peak is in fact the cradle of holiday in Canada.
Although agriculture was very prosperous with the passing of years, it is now the Casino of Charlevoix which represents certainly the most important activity. Located close to the Richelieu Manor, it receives many visitors at each year. Industries of surrounding pastes and papers and tourism are also major sectors of the place. Moreover, the products of the pastes and papers are embarked by boat with the quay of Point-With-Peak to be conveyed for the majority towards Europe.
