One calls, within the Federation of Malaysia, Malayan States the nine States of the Malayan Péninsule which have a hereditary sovereign:
These sovereigns, who carry the title of Rajah in Perlis, Yang di-Pertuan Besar in Negeri Sembilan and Sultan elsewhere, respect the principles of a Constitutional monarchy. They are the nine sovereigns of the Malayan States which elect one of them Yang di-Pertuan Agong , i.e. the king of the federation of Malaysia.
It is necessary to distinguish the Malayan States from the States of the Malaysia, which include/understand, in addition to the Malayan States, the old British colonies of Malacca and Penang, which does not have a traditional sovereign but is directed by a governor who carries the title of Yang di-Pertuan Negeri and is named by the king.
Historically and in a broader direction, the expression d'" States malais" can also include the provinces inhabitants of Thailand of Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla and Yala, which formed old the Royaume of Patani and the province of Satun, detached of Kedah.
Until the formation of a " Malaise" union; ( Malayan Union ) in 1946 by the British, the Malayan States were divided into " Malayan states fédérés" , created in 1896 and directed by an high commissioner British sitting at Kuala Lumpur and represented in each States by a resident British, and in " Malayan states non-fédérés" , whose sovereign was assisted by a " conseiller" British.
