Malamocco

Malamocco is a small hamlet of Venice in Italy.

Geography

Located on the southernmost part of the island of the Lido, offshore bar which separates the Lagune from Venice of the Adriatique, it inherited its name the antique Metamaucum . The locality is separated from the remainder of the Lido by a narrow channel which belonged to the ancient port. It gives its name to the mouth of the current port, located at a few kilometers more in the south (port also known under the name of “Alberoni port”), principal entry of the trading vessels towards the port of Marghera and Mestre.

Tourist interests

The church of St Maria Assunta XII century (restored to the XIV and XVI century), Palazzo del Podestà (palate of the Podestat XV century) and the fort.

History

Like the other inhabited centers of the lagoon, it underwent all the invasions interesting Italy between V and VII century. In 601, Metamauco , where refuge exiled Padoue found destroyed by the Lombard S, became one of the principal maritime centers Vénètes of the Byzantine Empire.

Become episcopal see depend on the patriarchate of Grado, into 742 the seat is transferred from the Duchy of Venice. In this period the conflicts Metamauco occur, combined with Equilo, against Eraclea, preceding ducal city.

In the years the 809-810 city undergoes the hard attack of the army of the Francs ordered by Pépin (king d' Italie 781-810) wire of Charlemagne. The threat of the Francs having weakened the position of the city, into 812, new the Doge, Angelo Partecipazio, definitively transfers the seat from the government in the sourer city of Civitas Rivoalti , current Venice.

In 828, the body of San Marco is transferred from Alexandria (Egypt) to Metamauco . The following year the city is shaven following a revolt between former Doge Obelerio Antenoreo, unloaded with Metamauco , which tried to reverse the government of Giovanni Ier Participazio.

In 900, the center undergoes, without result, the attack of an army of Magyars. From now on committed towards the decline, gradually threatened by water and in spite of great work of raising of the grounds, in 1110 the antique Metamauco was destroyed by a violent tide.

The new Metamauco (current Malamocco) was rebuilt and preserved numbers of privileges under the terms of its past of ducal city, inheriting a Podestat like its neighbor, the small island of Popilia.

Between 1379 and 1381, it lay in defensive works of Venice during the Guerre of Chioggia.

These last years were prone to notable attempts at suvagarde of the place, as well from the “conservatory” point of view as from the point of view of defense against “ the acqua Alta ”. Indeed the locality, exposed to the phenomenon of high tide, was isolated from water of the lagoon by a belt of Lido-San Nicolo]] and with the north of that from [[Chioggia]]. It is located between two cords of the littoral which separate the lagoon from the sea: islands of [[the Lido (Venice)|Lido]] of Venice and [[Pellestrina]]. The port communicates directly, by the “''' channel of the tankers '''”, with Port of [[Marghera]], seat of chemical industries, oil and industrial of the wearing of Venice. The port, which owes its name in the city of ''' Malamocco ''', is currently protected by two long dams.
