Makuuchi
Makuuchi (幕内) (or Makunouchi (幕の内)) is the name of the first division by order of importance in the system of grading of the fighters of Sumo. It is division immediately above than division Jûryô. Division makuuchi includes/understands a little more than 40 fighters. At the top of this division are the champions, called Sanyaku, who gather Yokozuna, ôzeki, Sekiwake and Komusubi. There is generally between 8 and 12 fighters sanyaku. The other fighters of division are called Maegashira and are classified numerically, row 1 being most important. In addition to that, the fighters are classified sometimes in the east (higashi), sometimes in the west (nishi) of the banzuke (the classification). According to the tradition of the sumo, one will maegashira east will be classified better than will maegashira it western carrying the same number of row.
" Makuuchi " mean " literally; inside the curtain " , in reference at the time where the fighters of this division took place to prepare before their combat.
