Makatea
A makatea is the term in several Polynesian languages (Tuamotu, islands Cook) become generic in French, being used to indicate the coral formation of an island raised following tectonic movements or the passage of a hot second Point. These islands are generally old atolls, the interior depression being makes the old lagoon of this one of it. Nevertheless, the volcanic base can in certain cases always apparent being such as for example in Mangaia.
These makatea is often made of sifted abrupt cliffs of papered caves of concretions.
Some of these islands (Nauru, Banaba or Makatea) were exploited for their Phosphate, i.e. the deposits of Guano having accumulated in their interior depression lasting of the thousands of years
The term is at the origin of the name of the island éponyme of Makatea.
