Flavius Julius Valerius Majorinus , known as Majorien (November 420 - August 7th 461), reign on the Roman Empire of Occident from 457 to 461. He was the last emperor who moved in the Roman tiny room formed by the Italy, the south of the Gaulle and the frontage the Mediterranean of the Spain.
Officially, the emperor of the East Leon Ier is the only legitimate emperor after the death of Valentinien III. He thus grants in February 457 the title of Patrice to Ricimer, and that of Master of the militia (Magister militum) with Majorien, but their authority is limited to Italy. The Gallo-Roman aristocracy, the Burgondes and the Visigoths, old supports of Avitus reject them.
In April 457 the army of Italy proclaims Majorien emperor. This one sends Ægidius to subdue the Gallo-Roman rebellion and to take again Lugdunum (Lyon) with the Burgondes. Ægidius reaches that point with the assistance of frank auxiliaries and the occupied Visigoths in Spain cannot react. Having thus begun again what remains of Gaulle Roman, Majorien settles with Arles into 458, leaving Ricimer in Italy.
It maintains the Visigoths on the territory which was conceded to them and preserves the Roman authority on the Languedoc and the provinces of Tarraconaise and Carthaginian.
Its government is noticed by social measures, such as remissions of tax arrears, and it tries to limit the monopolizations of the Church, prohibiting to the women to strip the children of their heritage by giving their goods to the Church, or to put at the convent the young girls whose parents want to get rid.
In 460 Majorien prepares with Alicante an unloading in Maurétanie against the Vandales. The king of the Vandals Genséric precedes it and destroys his fleet.
In July 461, Majorien regains Italy. Ricimer the captive fact and carries out it in August 461, without the historians knowing the reason of it.
Its reign is known by the Panegyric of Majorien, composed by Sidoine Apollinaire.
