Maizières-the-Metz is a common French, located in the department of the the Moselle halfway between Metz and Thionville, it is the Chef-lieu canton. Its inhabitants is called Maiziérois.

History

The city is quoted for the first time in 1218 under the name of “Masieres” and belongs at the time with the Abbaye Saint-Vincent of Metz and this until the Révolution.

In 1944, the locality was bombarded and almost entirely destroyed.

Iron and steel industry

Maizières-the-Metz knew two cast iron factories: the first, property of the company Sambre and the Moselle which exploited three blast furnaces fired in 1882 and 1898, and a second belonging initially to the Company of the Blast furnaces of the Moselle, acquired in 1905 by the factory of Rombas. In 1917, the factories of Maizières-the-Metz count four blast furnaces including two of recent construction… Before 1940, these four blast furnaces produce approximately 900 tons of cast iron per day. They are in a crisis during the second world war and will not be rebuilt.
