Mainvault
Mainvault (in Picardy Mèyo ) is an old commune of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut.
It is, since the fusion of the communes of 1977, a section of the city of Ath.
In the absence of archaeological excavations, the deep past of Mainvault remains still unknown in spite of some lucky finds. Nevertheless, the Roman roadway of Bavay with Velzeke circumvents the village by the west. An important seigneuriale family appears in the texts as of XIIe century. By after the major part of the borough passes in the stronghold of Lahamaide then to Egmont; the remainder of the locality is held by many ecclesiastical or laic lords.
Dedicated to Pierre saint, the church depends during the Old Mode on the Chapter on Cambric. Rebuilt at the end of the XVIIIe century, it is of neo-classic style, out of stones and bricks.
Out of economic material, Mainvault is primarily an agricultural commune; the meadow prevails there since 1950. In addition to three windmills, of two breweries and a salt refinery, the only nonagricultural activity was, until the end of the XIXe century, the spinning of the flax and the weaving of the fabric.
Concurrently to several buildings of beautiful architecture, like the presbytery (1723), the farm of Billebacq (XVIIIe S.) and that of the place (XIXe S.), it are necessary to raise the martyrdom. Established with side of the mount at the beginning of XIXe S., this whole of sculptures out of blue stone is signed J.J. Bottemanne, Soignies, 1775.
