the Mail is a Swiss daily newspaper of gauch E of French language published with Geneva. It differently posts the slogan “essence”, adopting a line socio-policy clear and different from that of the large press of information.
the Mail was created in 1868 with the subtitle religious Feuille and main road to defend the catholic interests in Geneva Protestant woman. In 1892, its publication becomes daily, with a pulling from 3000 to 4000 specimens. After the separation of the Church and the State, in 1907, the catholic sheet of fight loses its raison d'être and its pulling falls with 1000 specimens.
As from 1923, under the direction of Rene Leyvraz, the Mail becomes a newspaper social-Christian and pulling reaches 5700 specimens in 1932. The Catholic church finds the line of the newspaper too on the left and replaces the writer of chief in 1935. Ten years later, one points out Rene Leyvraz. In the years 1960, pulling oscillates around 8000 specimens.
Since 1982, date on which the drafting as a chief is ensured by Pierre Dufresne, the Mail is defined as a humanistic sheet of opinion stressing the questions of Christianity and the company.
In 1992, Patrice Mugny takes again the head of the newspaper. Under its direction, the Mail breaks, in 1996, definitively with the Catholic church and affirms more and more a socially committed line.
In 1999, Manuel Grandjean succeeds Patrice Mugny, whom he assisted during the previous years. Confirming the line progressist newspaper, it gives him a coloring altermondialist and offers to the newspaper a credibility increased by a demanding journalism. Editorial collaborations are established with other titles, like diplomatic Le Monde , It Manifesto and Pages of left .
Since 2000, the Mail is the only newspaper printed in Geneva. It is also independent, i.e. that it does not belong to an press group like Edipresse, Tamedia or Harrowing. It also has the characteristic to only depend most marginally on the advertizing revenues (20%). The essence of its financial resources comes from the subscriptions or the subscription, quasi annual, near its readers.
Whereas the newspaper reached exceeds the threshold of 10.000 subscribers in 2004, Manuel Grandjean leaves the drafting as a chief with Marco Gregori. This one continues in the line traced up to now, develops some new editorial projects, but does not manage to control an erosion of the subscriptions. He announces his departure after less than two years spent to the head of the newspaper.
October 4th, 2006, association editor of the newspaper chooses the successor of Marco Gregori. It is about Fabio Lo Verso, journalist of Italian origin in post office with the Tribune de Genève . It took its new functions in January 2007.
For three years, the subscriptions have fallen in lower part of 10.000. Vis-a-vis a situation considered to be extremely critical, the Mail launched in September 2007 a call a new call to the solidarity of its readers. November 25th, the daily newspaper announced the removal of its sports column, a measurement presented like a profit of coherence and a financial oxygen bowl.
