Maienfeld
Maienfeld is a common Suisse of the Canton of the Grisons.
History
Mentioned at the 4th century under the name of Magia on the Table of Peutinger, the locality constituted a halt in the valley of the Rhine on the way of Zurich to Bregenz. At the 14th century, the Walser base several hamlets on the heights of the village. Its administration, attached to that of the borough close to Malans, is codified at the 15th century and a treaty is concluded in 1438 between the city and the barons from Brandis. The community, of culture rhétoromane, is germanisée at the 16th century and saw the Réforme since 1529. Following the creation of the way of railroad Coire - Zurich at the end of the 19th century, the commune loses of its importance on the network of commercial transport.
Geography
Maienfeld is with ten kilometers in the east of Sargans in the Rhenish valley of Coire and in extreme cases northern of Bad Ragaz. It has an Alpine way of passage (St Luzisteig) towards the principality of the Liechtenstein with a medieval frontier fortification sheltering a barracks of the Swiss army. The surface of the commune is of 32 km ² including 1433 ha of grounds used for agriculture (122 hectares of vines), 10 km ² of wood and forests and 174 ha of Alpage.
Economy
The Viticulture constitutes the first source of revenue of the commune whose wine surface represents more of the quarter of that of the canton. The Maienfelder includes/understands several type of vines (especially of Pinot Meunier and the Silvaner Riesling like of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris). Tourism is also very active with the popular passion caused by the character of the novel of Johanna Spiry Heidi whose adventures are supposed to occur mainly on the mountain pastures from the commune. A course of walk thus recalls its history and the tourist area bears its name (Heidiland).
