Maiar
See also: Maia
The Maiar (name Quenya, in the singular: Maia ) is characters of the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, present in Silmarillion and the unfinished Contes and legends , inter alia.
Maiar belong to the Ainur, the divinities resulting from the spirit of Ilúvatar, the creative god. They are however spirits second-rate, serving the higher spirits, the Valar. They are much more numerous than the latter, but only a small portion of them is named.
Maiar were a long time, in the thought of Tolkien, of the children of Valar: thus Eönwë and Ilmarë were they the children of Manwë and Varda, while Gothmog was the son of Melkor. This idea of children of Valar ( Valarindi ) was thereafter abandoned: the text entitled Ósanwë-kenta explains why Valar could procreate, but did not do anything of it.
Servants of Valar
-
Eönwë, herald and banner-bearer of Manwë, messenger of Valar, herald of Manwë.
- Ilmarë, following of Varda and also girl of Varda and Manwë.
- Ossë, lord of the inland seas, who learns how with the Falathrim to build naves.
- Uinen, wife of Ossë, mistress of calm water.
- Melian, following of Vána and Estë, it marries Elwë, a prince elf who becomes lord of the Gray Elfes.
- Arien, spirit of fire, following of Vána, guardian of Laurelin, the gilded Tree. She became conducting sun after the death of Laurelin.
- Tilion, servant of Oromë, guard of Telperion, the white Tree, guides the Moon with dead of Telperion.
- Salmar, which manufactured the horns of Ulmo (Ulúmuri).
Some estimate that Tom Bombadil and Baie of Gold would be also of Maiar. No text confirms this assumption.
