Mahot

One calls mahots with the Réunion, several indigenous species of trees or shrubs, pertaining to the kind Dombeya or to the kind Hibiscus .

In traditional classification, the kind Dombeya is included in the family of the sterculiacées , while the kind Hibiscus belongs to the family of the malvacées .
In the Classification APG, which is based on genetic studies of distances, these two kinds are gathered in the same family of the malvacées , confirming a certain form of intuition of old. Some mahots in addition make inevitably think, by their pace and the shape of their sheets, with the Tilleul S, whose family, the tiliaceous , it was also amalgamated with malvacées in APG.

The majority of the mahots are characteristic of the landscapes of the wood forest of color tops, in the mountains of the Meeting, but certain species belong to the basic flora altitude, in forest sowing or close to the littoral.

The endemic species of the Meeting are located by the logo, those endemic only of Mascareignes by the logo.

The majority of the Dombeya of the forests of mountain do not have vernacular names by species, and all are indifferently called mahots. There exists moreover of the frequent variations of forms and hybridizations, which do not facilitate the recognition botanique.
Dombeya populnea , species of the forests sowings of Mascareignes is only kind Dombeya not to be there usually called mahot, but more often " Wood of scent bleu" , to bring closer to another malvacée protected, the " Wood of scent blanc" ( Ruizia cordata ).

    • Hibiscus boryanus : mahot bastard (more known under the name of maroon Foulsapate: wet species of forest of bottoms)
    • Hibiscus columnaris : mahot rampart (species of forest sowing of bottoms)
    • Hibiscus tiliaceus : mahot seaside (the indigenous statute of this species present on many tropical shores is not certain)
