Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (born Chris Wayne Jackson the March 9th 1969 with Gulfport, the Mississippi) is a former professional American player of Basket-ball.

Abdul-Rauf changed its name into 1991 following its conversion with the Islam. After a career NCAA with the University of Louisiana State, it was selected with the third rank of draft NBA 1990 NBA by the Denver Nuggets. He played with Denver until in 1995, he was a player-key of the team, gaining the trophy of NBA Most Improved Player in 1993. Abdul-Rauf played thereafter for the Sacramento Kings and the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was leader of the league to the percentage of throw-francs in 1994 and 1996, missing for an unhappy throw-franc the record of the history NBA expressed as a percentage of throw-francs at the time of the season 1993-94 (he makes a success of a performance of 219 throw-francs out of 229, that is to say 95,6% whereas Calvin Murphy had made a success of 95,8% (206/215) at the time of the season 1980-81). It holds the most percentage of success to the throw-francs in career of the history of the NBA with 90,5%. After having left the NBA, it left to play in Europe, taking its retirement at the conclusion of the season 2004-05. At the time of the season 2006-07, it left its retirement for the third time of its career to evolve/move with Aris Salonique.

Abdul-Rauf had the syndrome of the Tourette which it exceeded to make a success of a sporting career.

Since it was withdrawn from the NBA, it built a Mosquée in its town of Gulfport, the Mississippi and became Imam. It transformed a property which was a residence of sale of Crack in mosque to show a symbol and to mobilize its district for the fight against drug and the crime.

Discusses

Abdul-Rauf is more known for the controversy which it caused when it refused to rise towards the American flag before the matches, saying that this flag was a " symbol of oppression" and that the United States had long a " history of tyrannie". He said that to rise for the flag and the American anthem would be in contradiction with its religious convictions. March 12th, 1996, the National Basketball Association suspended Abdul-Rauf for its refusal to rise, but the suspension did not last that for a meeting. Two days after, the league negotiated a compromise with him, where it was to rise during the national anthem, but could close the eyes and look by ground. He recited a prayer silently lasting this time.

With an aim of provocation and answer to this controversy, four employees of " KBPI" from Denver entered a mosque of Colorado and played " the Banner" Star-Spangled; with drums and trumpets.
