Mahavihara
The Mahavihara , “Large monastery” in Faded, is the principal site of the Bouddhisme Theravada with the Sri Lanka. It was founded with Anuradhapura. The monks of Mahavihara laid down in writing the Buddhist gun faded (Tipitaka) at the time of the birth of J. - C.
At the 4th century Mahavihara was destroyed by king Mahasena, inspired by Buddhism Mahayana, but was rebuilt shortly after. The temple fought against the influences of the mahayana and the vajrayana until the 11th century, date on which the theravada became religion of State.
Nowadays, Mahavihara represents the most orthodoxe core of the theravada.
