Mahé (Seychelles)

Mahé is an island of the Indian Ocean, located by 4°40' S and 55°28' E. It is the principal island of the Seychelles, which shelters the capital, Victoria.

Its surface is of 144 km ² (approximately a third of the country), of granitic nature , it culminates to 906 m, the Morne Seychellois. It is approximately 27 km long on 7 km broad.

Its population is of 70.000 inhabitants (90% of Seychellois), of which more half lives in Victoria.

Its name was given to him in 1774, in homage to the French navigator Bertrand-François Mahé of Bourdonnais (1699-1753).
