Magpie V

Michele Ghislieri (January 17th 1504 with Bosco Marengo in the Piedmont - May 1st 1572 with Rome) is the 223e Pape, of 1566 with 1572, under the name of Pie V (in Latin Pius V , in Italian Pio V ).

Youth and beginnings

Born a family from easy peasants, it enters to the Dominicain S at the 14 years age and is ordered priest in 1528. He teaches the Philosophie and the Théologie during 16 years within the order, and becomes Master of the beginners. In 1546, it enters to the the Holy Office. Its activity with Like and Bergamo draw the attention of the Carafa cardinal, future Paul IV, which appoints it general police chief of the Enquiry with Rome in 1551. In 1556, Paul IV names it bishop Sutri and inquisitor of the faith with Milan and in Lombardy.

In 1557, it receives the cardinal hat of and is made large inquisitor in 1558. In 1559, it is transferred to the diocese from Mondovi. Within Crowned College, he is vigorously opposed to Pie IV which intends to admit there Ferdinand de Médicis, old hardly 13 years, like with Maximilien II, which wants to give up the celibacy of the priests. He thus falls in disgrace. To Mondovi, it leads an intense pastoral activity. It fights against the duke of Savoy to maintain the privileges of the Church and protects the barnabites, of recent foundation (1553). During the Council of Thirty, it remains faithful to the Carafa clan.

Pope

With died of Black and white IV, it is elected pope the January 7th 1566 and is crowned the 19. Its Conclave lasted only 18 days. As of its election, it gets busy to reduce the luxury and dissipation to the pontifical court. Its first target is the collection of statues gréco-Romans of the Belvédère, which he regards as idols. The statues are hidden with the public by shutters out of wooden, and some are transferred to the Capitole.

He also undertakes to reform the Roman Curie. He reforms in 1569 Daterie, in charge of the concession with the ecclesiastical benefit, and the apostolic Pénitencerie. He also creates in 1571 the congregation of the Index, to supervise the publications. Lastly, it publishes the Roman Catéchisme resulting from the Concile of Thirty, a breviary and a missal, which make authority until the liturgical reforms of the Vatican II. It founds the Rite tridentin by the bubble Quo Primum , the July 14th 1570.

Outside, it reaffirms the primacy of the pope vis-a-vis it civil capacity by the bubble In Cœna Domini . Decided to finish some with the Anglicanism, it deposited and excommunicated Elisabeth I {{Re}} of England in 1570, without effect. Especially, he endeavors to link Christendom against the Turks. The first year of its reign, he proclaims a jubilee to beseech of God the victory. In this same optics, it supported the knights of Malta and the Christians of Hungary.

Lastly, in 1570, it forms the Holy League with the Spain and the Republic of Venice. The League gains the naval victory of Lépante the October 7th 1571. Magpie V allots this success to the devotion with the Rosaire. Consequently, it dedicates first Sunday of October to the festival of the rosary, and adds “help of the Christians” to the Litanie of Notre-Dame de Lorette. The victory is celebrated in the streets of Rome like a ancient Triomphe.

He dies on May 1st 1572 of the disease of the stone. He is béatifié by Clément X in 1672 and canonized by Clément XI the August 4th 1712.
