Magpie III

Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini (His, May 29th 1439 - Rome, October 18th 1503), elected Pope the September 22nd 1503 under the name of Black and white III (in Latin Pius III , in Italian Pio III ).

The August 18th 1503, the pope Alexandre VI died. The September 16th opened the deliberations of the Conclave for the election of its successor. Two candidates were opposed: the cardinal Georges d' Amboise (1460-1510), minister of Louis XII, supported by César Borgia, and the cardinal Julien della Rovere, the future Jules II. To avoid long discussions, the voters are reflected agreement, as of the September 22nd, on the name of the cardinal François Todeschini-Piccolomini, nephew of Pie II, which took the name of Magpie III in remembering his/her maternal uncle.

He stated at once to want to be the pope of peace. It wished the general reform of the Church and the pacification of all the Occident, but it died, less than one month after its election, the October 18th 1503. It was buried with the Basilique Saint-Pierre, then its remainders were transferred to the church San Andrea della Valle, at the sides of those of Pie II.
