Magnum Photographs

Magnum Photographs is a photographic Coopérative , the first of this kind to be born. It was created in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour.
Magnum Photos gathers among largest Photographe S and photojournalists of the world. It has its offices with New York (dealing with the American continent), London (British Isles, Oceania, Africa and part of Asia), Paris (continental Europe) and Tokyo (Japan, China and Taiwan).
Raison d'être
The purpose of its creation was to make it possible the Photographe S to keep a total control on the right of their photographs.Previously, the photographic agencies bought all the rights on the productions of the photographers. And once their sold rights, they did not have any more any control on their photographs. It is mainly for this reason that Robert Capa and his/her friends created Magnum Photographs.
Procedure of admission
A photographer, if it wishes to become member of Magnum Photographs, must be “nominated”. He works then under the direction of a photographer member of Magnum Photographs, during one two years trial period. At the end of this period, the “nominated” photographer can become associated photographer. He is then employed full-time for the co-operative, without in being still shareholder.After two years, it with the possibility of reaching the statute of full member and of becoming thus Co-shareholder. But it happens that nominated” or associated photographer a “does not arrive at the statute of member.

- James Nachtwey - it left Magnum to found the Agence VII
- Sebastiao Salgado - He was member of the Magnum agency of 1979 to 1994 then left it to create Amazonas Images, its own photo agency.
- Charles Harbutt - he was elected president de Magnum Photographs twice, the first time being in 1979. He left Magnum in 1981, because according to him of the increasing commercial ambitions of the agency, and to work on more personal topics. (Source: Anglophone Wikipedia).
