The magniolia is a kind of Plante S, of the family of the Magnoliacée S, which includes/understands approximately 120 species, primarily Arbre S and shrubs, of the hot moderate areas, especially known like plants of ornament.

Etymology

This kind was named Magnolia by the brother Charles Plumier (1646-1704) in the honor of Pierre Magnol (1638-1715), doctor and botanist French, who was director of the botanical garden of Montpellier. Another assumption wants that it is Carl von Linné which created the word Magnolia , also in the honor of Pierre Magnol and his concept of family used in botanical classification.

Main features

Trees or shrubs, with generally large, alternate, oval or elliptic, null and void or persistent sheets, generally coriaces.

The Fleur S recluses, large, very decorative, are often drawn up, generally forms cut of it. The Périanthe is made of 6 to 9 petaloid tepals (undifferentiated petals and sepals) of color clear, white rosy, yellow clearly. The cheesecloth S, very many are lamellate. The Carpelle S are laid out in cone on the receptacle. For the botanists, it is a primitive flower.

Flowering generally appears at the end of 15 to 30 years. The fruits in the shape of cone contain seeds with red tegument.

Distribution

The magniolias are originating in the Far East (Japan, China), of Central Asia (the Himalayas), of North America (Southern of the the United States), and of Central America. They were largely acclimatized in Europe.

These trees are liked rather in ground S fresh, humus-bearing, neutral pH. Certain species support pH superiors to 7 but fear active limestone.
