Magister militum

The magister militum is often translated by “Master of the militia” or “Masters of the soldiers”, “chiefs of the armies”, “chiefs of staff”.

Initially soldiers

The command of the Roman armed was given to the magistri militum sometimes distributed in magister peditum (Infantry) and magister equitum (Cavalry). The creation of this function would go up at the time of the emperor Constantin when it reorganized the armies (312-325), thus concretizing the separation of the military and civil capacities. The station was strategic and a political sign extremely for the countries concerned.

Then the plenipotentiary ones

Thereafter with the loss of being able of the emperor, the magister militum became the principal representative of this capacity. The emperor of the East Théodose II charged officially the magister militum Castinus with controlling on his behalf the Roman Occident after the death of Honorius in 423.

Fall of the Roman Empire

The Duke S (Latin: duces ) of the federate People, avoided of this title, started to exert an office plurality of the capacities (executive, legislative, soon Temporel and spiritual by their conversion and progressive formation of the Christian Occident). As a Gaulle Roman, Syagrius is the Romain last to carry this title surrounded by Germanic kingdoms endorsed by Foedus.
