Magic of Chaos

The Magie of Chaos (or Chaos Magick ) is a new form of Rituel and magic, using the Saut of paradigms states of inhibition or excitation of the state of consciousnesses, called " Gnosis, " and including/understanding in a nonrestrictive way, the Meditation, the Song, the Dance, the use of drug, the pain or the orgasm. The practitioners support that they can model reality by using this form of magic.

Austin Osman Spare was with the departure resulting from the tradition of the Golden Dawn, and some of its suckers such O.T.O and the Astrum Argentum of Aleister Crowley, but it broke its bonds with them in order to work in an independent way. It developed a theory and practices which will influence, after its death, the Illuminates off Thanateros. Specifically, Spare developed the use of the sigil S (seals), and of the techniques implying of the states of extase (see Gnose below). Spare was also a pioneer in the development of the personal crowned alphabets, and he was also a talented artist who used the image in his magic technique. The majority of recent work on the sigils are based on work of Spare; the construction of a sentence detailing the magic intention, the elimination of the letters doubled blooms, and the artistic recombination of the remaining letters in order to constitute the sigil (seals). Although it is not at the origin of this term, one can regard Spare as the first Magician of Chaos.

After the death of Aleister Crowley, the magic as practiced by the culture occults in England tended to becoming increasingly experimental, personal and less and less related to Magic Ordres. The reasons of this can be in the diffusion of the old secrecies concerning the Magie (particularly with works of Crowley and Israel Regardie), in the nonconventional magic of Austin Osman Spare, in the influence of the Discordianisme, and the growing popularity of the Magie caused by the success of the tradition of the Wicca and the use of psychedelic drugs.

The term of Chaos Magick appeared for the first time in the Null Liber of Peter Carroll, published in 1978. In this book, Carroll formulated several concepts on the Magie which differed radically from the " mysteries magiques" time of Crowley. The Magicians who align themselves with his ideas call themselves Chaotes or Chaoistes.

Carroll was also the cofounder with Ray Sherwin of the Magic Pact of the Illuminates off Thanateros (IOT); an organization which continues still today its research and the development of Magick Chaos.

The Jump of Magic Paradigms

The concept of the jump of paradigms is undoubtedly the principal characteristic of Magick Chaos. It borrowed this term from the philosopher Thomas Kuhn, and Carroll made technique of the change of model of magic (or Paradigme) the major concept of the Magic of Chaos. An example of the jump of paradigm is to practice a rite lovecraftien, by the use of the techniques of the book of Edred Thorsson. These two paradigms are very different one from the other, but while the Chaote uses one of them, he believes in him without reserve until being unaware of the existence of the other paradigms. The magic jump of paradigm since found its way in magic works of the practitioners of other traditions, but the Magic of Chaos remains the ground where it the most is used and developed.

The principal slogan of the Magic of Chaos is " Nothing is true, all is allowed " allotted to Hassan-i-Sabbah and used by Friedrich Nietzsche in its " Thus Zarathustra" Spoke;. Just like the " Do what you want will be the whole of Loi" of Aleister Crowley this sentence is often badly interpreted in its literal direction. However, " Nothing is true, all is permis" is interpreted by the Magicians of Chaos like meaning " there does not exist any objective truth apart from our perceptions; consequently all things are true and possible ".

The idea is that the belief is a tool which can be used at will rather than in an unconscious way. Certains Chaotes thinks that to adopt strange beliefs in oneself an experiment is which is worth the sorrow to be lived and consider that the flexibility of the belief is a form of freedom.

The state of Gnosis

Another concept introduced by Carroll is the state of gnosis, or Gnose. This state is defined as being a modified state of the Conscience which is necessary in order to work in the magic.

The state of gnosis is reached when the spirit of a person is concentrated on an object, a thought, a goal and that all the other thoughts are rejected. Chaotes develop their own methods in order to reach this state.

Magicians of Chaos

The practitioners of the Magic of Chaos try to remain out all categories, because for them, the points of view, the theories, the beliefs, the practices and even the personalities are tools which can be arbitrarily selected in order to include/understand or to handle the world which they see and create around them. The Magicians of Chaos are often described like amusing, individualistic, not very serious. They describe themselves like tolerant.

Symbols and gods

The Magic of Chaos is single within the magic traditions in the direction where it does not pose any symbol or particular God. They prefer to choose the gods and the Symbole S of the various existing traditions in order to give up them then to pass to other systems. There thus does not exist any particular god chaote who can be called upon in a uniform way by all the chaotes of the whole world…

According to the principle that all can have a significance and that all can have a magic capacity, the Rituel S of Magick Chaos are centered around symbols as various as the color Octarine, or Harpo Marx. Sometimes, they temporarily develop Culte S which can be included/understood like parodies of the established magic traditions.

The deities usually associated with Chaos are: Tiamat, Eris, Loki and Hun Tun.

The star chaote with eight points or (Chaosphère) drift of the news of fantasy of Michael Moorcock.

With regard to Loki it helps what are ready has to be given has bottom in their magic practices and which adopt a pleasant attitude with him.

Pop culture

The Magic of Chaos is found in the comics of Marvel, in " Buffy against the vampires" like in the plays Warhammer Fantasy and " Warhammer 40,000".

Grant Morrison incorporated the theories of Magick Chaos like their practices in his comic book The Invisibles .
