Maggie Teyte
Maggie Teyte , of its true name Margaret Touches , born with Wolverhampton (Staffordshire) the April 17th 1888 and deceased with London the May 26th 1976, is an English singer of opera.
She is resulting from an old driven out family Huguenot E of France by the edict of Nantes, which can explain its taste for the French culture. His/her father is pianist amateur.
In 1904, it settles in Paris and becomes the pupil of Jean de Reszke and Reynaldo Hahn. She begins with the Opera at 18 years at the sides from Lilli Lehmann. June 13rd, 1908, she sings Mélisande with the Op3era Comique, succeeding in this role Mary Garden. As from 1910, it extends its repertory and continues its career in the United States (1911-1919).
After the First World War, parallel to the opera, it gives many recitals (works of Debussy, of Hahn) and occurs in operettas.
During the Second world war, it takes part in moral of the troops by the organization of recitals where it is accompanied by the pianist Gerald Moore. She receives, with titrates the Cross of Lorraine for services rendered to the Free France.
After war, it carries out a new triumphal round in the United States. In 1948, she sings for the first time Pelléas and Mélisande on the American ground, whose role was hitherto the prerogative of Mary Garden.
She withdraws herself in 1955 and dedicates herself to teaching. She is made chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1957. She is also honoured with the title of Dame off the British Empire .
