Magellan Strait

The Magellan Strait is a maritime passage located at the Southern of the America between the continent in north and the Ground of fire and the Cape Horn in the south. The strait is largest and the most important natural passage between the oceans Atlantique and Pacifique.

Ferdinand Magellan became the first European to sail the strait in 1520 during its Circumnavigation. As Magellan entered the strait a 1er November, it was initially called the Détroit of All Saints' day .

The Chile took possession of the strait the September 21st 1843 and always sovereignty has some today. The president Manuel Bulnes made the decision to occupy the Magellan Strait following the example hero of independence Bernardo O' Higgins. The occupation was made by it by sailors and Chilean fishermen come from the area of Chiloé, and the taking possession was effective on September 21st, 1843. The first foundation of a colony (Strong Bulnes with some 50 kilometers in the south of Punta Arenas) was carried out the October 10th of the same year. The town of Punta Arenas, for its part, first port of the strait of Magellan, was created the December 18th 1848.

Before the creation of the Channel of Panamá, the Magellan Strait was the second passage more used to pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific behind the Cape Horn.

It is a passage known for its difficulty due to its inhospitable climate like with the narrowness of the passage.
