Magdeburg

History

Magdeburg (in German Magdeburg ) is a town of Germany, Capitale of the Land of Saxony-Anhalt, on the edge of the Elba. Its population rises with 227.990 inhabitants.

Fortified town Protestant strategic, Magdeburg was completely devastated by a fire and the totality of its massacred population, after its catch of attack by the mercenaries Catholique S carried out by the general Tilly the May 20th 1631, during the Guerre Thirty Year old. It will never find its central role.

This city is famous for the experiment of the Hémisphères of Magdeburg, showing the force of the Atmospheric pressure. It was carried out by Otto von Guericke, burgomaster of Magdeburg in 1654.

In 1945, the city (which then have 350.000 inhabitants) and even its suburbs, who manufactures machine tools, is completely destroyed by the allied air raids. The cathedral, which with its arrow with 104  m is highest of the east of Germany, is rebuilt. The city is today in full change since the reunification of the Germany. The face of the capital of Saxony-Anhalt is always marked by the building sites, the bulldozers and the scaffolding which hides the hideous frontages of post-war period.

A Tubular bridge of 918  m has just been built, it is longest of Europe.

It is also the city where the group Tokio Hotel was formed.

The manufacturer of wind Enercon which has two thousand employees.

University

The University Otto von Guericke opened its doors in 1993. It accommodates approximately 12.000 students per annum. Last nine sections are open there: mathematics, data processing, sciences of nature, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering and of information, genius of the systems and the processes, social sciences, economy and management and medicine.
