Mafate

Located at the Meeting, the circus of Mafate is synonymous with insulation, loneliness and inaccessibility. To enter there or leave there, there exist only two ways: that of the airs and that of the hiking trails.

Indeed, the difficulty of its access, due to its tormented and chaotic relief, prevents the road from penetrating in the middle of this natural sanctuary. The circus is an immense cauldron at the irregular bottom, strewn here and there many islets where the life, progressively of time was fixed.

Its inhabitants is called Mafatais.

Point of view and access points

The morning, before ennuagement is pronounced, the Written Roche (in north), the Maïdo (in the west) or the Grand Bénare (in south-west) constitute excellent points of view on the circus.

It is possible to enter in Mafate to foot:

  • Since the circus of Cilaos by the Collar of Taïbit.
  • Since the circus of Salazie by the Collar of the Oxen.
  • Since the west coast by the bed of the River of the Rollers, which takes its source in the circus or by the Canalisation of the Orange trees which offers a superb sight on the circus.
  • Since the Tops of the West by a path which leaves the top of the Maïdo (1000 m of uneven negative to join the islet of Rock Punt!).

Mafate offers to those which have courage to penetrate there of the sompteux and original landscapes. Its wild aspect and its insulation of any civilization are largely appreciated by the amateurs of high mountain. The pearls of this site are numerous:

  • the Forêt of Tamarins is most beautiful of the circus: the trees and the fog give him a fantastic side.

  • the Flat with sands and Three-Rocks: of the News with Rock Punt, a splendid path.
  • the Pineapple Victoria of the islet of the Orangers which are cultivated on the spot: it is said that they are best world.

  • Rock Punt, dominated by the Piton Maïdo

Flora

Mafate is the only known station of the floral species Eulophia borbonica , recently discovered.
