Maeglin

Maeglin is a character of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien.

History

Maeglin (320 - 510 P.A.) is the only son of Eöl the Black Elf and Aredhel, a Noldo.

Aredhel, sister of Turgon, had left Gondolin against the opinion of his/her brother; mislaid in the forest of Nan Elmoth, it was captured by Eöl the Black Elf and married it. They had a son, that Aredhel named Lómion , “child of the twilight” in Quenya. Eöl gave him a name only when it was twelve years old: it called it Maeglin .

Tired of Eöl and eager to re-examine Gondolin, Aredhel left Nan Elmoth with his/her son one day that Eöl was on a journey. This last learned the thing and continued them, managing to be introduced into Gondolin. Turgon offered to him to live in the city with his/her son or to die. Eöl proclaimed that he preferred to die with his son and tried to kill it out of a blow of javelin, but Aredhel interposed and died shortly after. For this crime, Eöl was thrown in a chasm top of the walls of the city.

Turgon made honor with Maeglin, which was not long in becoming an eminent character of Gondolin, liked of all except his/her cousin Idril, the girl from the king, with which it was however passionately in love with a however prohibited love, both being first cousins. She married finally human the Tuor, come to bring the warning of Ulmo to Turgon.

A few years later, Maeglin was lost in the mountains of the Echoriath, which encircled Gondolin, and was captured by Orques which brought it in front of Morgoth. Tortured, it ends up acknowledging the site of Gondolin, that Morgoth sought years since; this one promised in Maeglin the throne of the city and the hand of Idril, which helped it to perpetrate “most infamous of all treasons that one finds in the accounts of the Olden days” ( Silmarillion ).

In year 510 of the First Age, Morgoth sent its armies to destroy Gondolin. Maeglin did not accept the reward which it discounted: at the time when it prepared with défenestrer small the Eärendil, wire of Idril and Tuor, this last ran and fought against Maeglin, which was precipitated in the vacuum, just like his/her father had been it.
