Madredeus

Madredeus is a group of music Portuguese, which takes its origin in the district located around the Madre church of Deus, in the east of not less famous Alfama of Lisbon. Their music is a mixture of Fado, music folk, traditional and of popular Musique contemporary (especially Brésil ienne, in particular the Bossa nova). According to the proper words of Pedro Ayres Magalhães: “the group was created to put Portuguese in music, while bringing back the language to its musical format, this by the use of many substantives and vowels. The songs are very short because to each word a certain environment corresponds. It is a world of the intuition. ” ( the Azores de Madredeus ).

Biography

The founding members of the group are Pedro Ayres Magalhães (Guitare), Francisco Ribeiro (Violoncelle), Rodrigo Leão (keyboard), Gabriel Gomes (Accordéon) and Teresa Salgueiro (Chant). Magalhães and Leão created the group in 1985, that Ribeiro and Gomes joined in 1986.
Whereas they sought a singer, they discovered Teresa Salgueiro one evening in a club of Lisbon, whereas she sang pieces of Fado at an informal meeting with friends. Their music rained in Teresa which joined the group.

Their first album, Os dias da Madredeus , left in 1987, and met a very great success with the Portugal.

The album Existir of 1990, taken along by the title O Pastor , will make known them of the French-speaking public. However, after having carried out the Original soundtrack of the film Lisbon Story in 1995 (at the request of Wim Wenders) they started to know the international repute.

In 1995, two musicians also joined the group: Carlos Maria Trindade (who replaced Rodrigo Leão) and Jose Peixoto.

In 1997, Francisco Ribeiro and Gabriel Gomes left the group, while the musical style of the group moved away more and more from the Fado of its origins, in particular with the exit of the album O Paraíso .
