is a studio of films and series of animation Japan founded board on October 17th, 1971 by former employees of Mushi Production of which Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

Its first work was the adaptation animates of them Ace O Nerae! in collabaration with TMS. Since then, the studio worked on many successful films like Ninja Scroll , Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust , Perfect Blue or more recently the crossing of time . He also worked on many chasseuse television series like Sakura of charts , Trigun , X , Paranoia agent and Death Note .

History

With beginning of the year 70, the studio of Osamu Tezuka, Mushi Production, is at the edge of the bankruptcy and cannot prevent the escape of its employees any more. Some of them whose Masao Maruyama, Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro and Yoshiaki Kawajiri, still simple organizer, gather and found in October 1971 a new studio: Madhouse.

Throughout the Seventies, Osamu Dezaki realizes on behalf of the studio Tokyo Movie (which will become Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1977) of many series like Ace O Nerae! , IE naki No KB or Ganba No bôken. That will permettera in Madhouse under treating for Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS) which is then at this time a great success.

In 1980, Dezaki leaves Madhouse and joined Akio Sugino to found the studio Annapuru. Following this departure, Masao Maruyama takes the reins of the studio and propels Rintarō like principal realizer. Madhouse gives up the series production then and is devoted to the production of films and OAV as from 1986. It is during the Eighties that Madhouse starts to be affirmed like a major studio with successful films like Harmagedon , the Sword of Kamui or Gen of Hiroshima . It is as during this period as Kawajiri borer with its second film Yōjū toshi which enables him to gain a certain fame in the world of the animation of the time.

After a shy person return to the series production to beginning of the year 90 with in particular Yawara (1989-1992) or Azuki-chan (1995-1998), it is especially from 1998 that Madhouse joins again with the series chasseuse TV with in particular Trigun or Sakura of charts . It is as into 1998 as Perfect Blue leaves, the first film of Satoshi Kon which will consequently become a sure value of the studio.

In February 2004, the Japanese company Index corp. specialized in the contents for portable becomes majority shareholder, doing of Madhouse one of its subsidiary companies, and carries in May 2005 its participation in the capital of the studio in 72,4%.
