Biography

In addition to being a good skater, Madge Syers was excellent a swimmer and riding. She was introduced with a new less rigid style of ice-skating by a new coach, Edgar Syers. This new style was created by Jackson Haines. Madge and Edgar married in 1899. They made competition in the category couples and individual.

Madge Syers was registered with the Championnats of the world of 1902, when she discovered that there was no payment which specified the sex of the participants. At that time, it was badly seen for a woman to make competition, and the RESULTING had never believed that a woman could have tried the experiment. Syers made the competition, vĂȘtue of a skirt going to the ankles, and it finished second. Several people, including the winner of the competition Ulrich Salchow, thought that it would have to gain. After this championship, a payment was created to prevent the women from contributing against the men. The reason evoked for this payment was that the length of the skirts prevented the judges from seeing the feet of the skaters well.

Madge left a novel mode when it started to wear skirts to semi-calf. In 1903, a new competition, the championships of Great Britain, began and it was opened to the men and to the women. Madge and Edgar were registered. Madge has gained the competition, and her husband finished second. It gained the competition once again in 1904. In 1906, a Championnat of the world for women was created. Syers took part and gained the world title in it, exploit which she repeated the following year.

Strong of its victories, Madge Syers started to concentrate for the Olympic Games of summer of 1908. The figure skating made its entry in the Olympic world. Madge Syers gained Olympic gold into simple and bronze in couple with Edgar Syers.

Madge Syers withdrew competition shortly after the Olympic Games of 1908, because of a failing health.
