Its life and its work
“Sappho” was the nickname, according to the fashion of time, of this author of the XVII {{E}} century which one was accustomed of the Hôtel of Rambouillet before launching, in 1652, its clean literary living room, which gave a long time the ton of the Préciosité, of which it was one of most famous representing. The majority of the celebrities of the time, the Montausier, Rochefoucauld, Fayette, Sévigné, Conrart, Chaplain, Pomponne and Pellisson regularly honoured “Saturdays with Miss de Scudéry” of their conversations érudites and gallant. She was, under the name of her brother Georges, who forever hesitated to endorse the paternity of a great number of writings of his/her sister, the author with success of long gallant novels with key deprived of any historical probability where are recognized easily the portraits of characters such as Condé, Mrs. de Longueville, etc transposing in the Antiquité the life from the fashionable company from its time: Ibrahim or the Famous one Based (4 volumes, 1642); Artamène or Large Cyrus (1649-1653), the longest novel of the French literature (10 volumes); Clélie, Roman history (10 volumes, 1654-1660); Almahide or the slave queen (8 volumes, 1660); Mathilde d' Aguilar, Spanish history (1667).
Place of analyzes refined of the interior life of the characters whose portraits often have an astonishing relief, these works gave life to new emotions, such as the melancholy, the trouble, concern and certain soft daydreams which precede Rousseau. Published in share in the Moral of the world or Conversations (10 volumes, 1680-1682), the conversations full with direction and spirit of its characters became a kind of handbook of the elegant company. These novels gave place to a vogue of invaluable novels proposing a idealized vision of the love and a poetized painting of the fashionable company. It is in Clélie, history Roman which figure famous the Carte of Tightening to the gallant geography, confining sometimes with the mièvre, which diverted the invaluable current of its original modernism.
Madeleine de Scudéry nevertheless made hold, in Artamène or large Cyrus , of the remarks against the marriage very violent one with her heroin of the name of… Sappho which goes until saying that this institution is a tyranny. On this point, it will be coherent with itself while remaining unmarried until its death. This novel is also regarded by some critical arts persons as the first modern novel insofar as, its publication not having been stopped by the Fronde, this work, without defending political sedition, lets show through sympathies without illusions of Madeleine de Scudéry to the Slingers. The character of Sappho constitutes the first attested indication of the awakening owing to the fact that after the Sling, the women would not have any more the right to apply their talents but to the intellectual subjects and only in the private sphere. Moreover, the “retirement” of Sappho to the kingdom of the Sauromates - the legendary residence of the Amazones - in the tenth volume of Artamène coincides with the “retirement” of the Grande Miss. With Pellisson, with which it maintained a relation great fidelity, it influenced the Fountain and Molière which however seems to have ridiculed it under the name of “Magdelon”, diminutive of Madeleine , in the ridiculous Précieuses . She was also the first woman to receive the price of the eloquence of the French Academy. She was Académie of Ricovrati.
