Made up first name

A made up first name is the whole of two first names used jointly in the daily use to nominate the person. The current use in the French-speaking countries (and the recommendation of the officers of registry office) wants that they are separated by a Hyphen. But in the past, it was not thus and of many made up first names were written separated by a simple space, making them thus indistinguishable of the secondary first names.

The use of the juxtaposed first names appeared in the years 1770-80 in the baptismal certificates, the writing depending then on the interpretation of the priest who wrote the act.

The use of the hyphen and the Comma being very rare until half of the 19th century, at the time of the passage of the baptismal certificate (religious) to the acts of civil statue (birth, marriage, birth of the children, death) and to the authenticated acts , of many made up first names was molten in only one by suppression of separating space. For example much of Marie Anne became Marianne , whereas Marie-Anne remained very rare. From there the concept of usual first name got clear (often underlined in the registration forms school and university, and the right to correction or the addition of the mention … known as (E) X .

The orthographical standardization of the first names of this time of transition is thus prone to discussion and conventions differ according to the organizations (National library, dictionaries of the proper names, typographical conventions of the editors…). One generally recommends to compare several official documents (including the autobiographies), when they exist, but also to hold account, on a case-by-case basis, of the most frequent use, for example the most frequent C-W communication used as an author published (bibliography), where in the quotations.
